Celtic knot work and interlacing patterns were both decorative and religious to the Celts who based the designs on the oral traditions of their ancestors.

The designs were used to decorate stone crosses, manuscripts, jewelry and wood. Straight and diagonal, continuous and broken lines are joined with curves to portray unbroken knot patterns.

These patterns are also found in ancient Roman, Greek and Egyptian art.

The vibrant colors Celtic artists used were derived from metals, plants and minerals.
